If you’ve been wondering ‘how will the EU Mobility Package affect O Licences?’, we have some good news – you can help shape the answer to that question.
The EU Mobility Package is a collection of three upcoming initiatives designed to improve the governance of commercial road transport in the European Union (EU).
While Britain is no longer a member of the EU, any UK-based vehicles which travel to countries within the EU for business purposes must comply with these changes in order to be commercially viable.
The finer details of the requirements are still being considered because, somewhat encouragingly, rather than simply altering policy, the government has invited businesses with a vested interest in O Licence requirements to have their say on the changes.
However, at this early stage, we do know there will be two sets of changes made.
While February’s changes will cover posting of workers and some HGV operator licensing changes, May’s prospective changes to goods vehicle operator licences will be the most significant for fleet businesses.
This O Licence update will expand the operator licensing regime to include any vehicles used for hire and reward that weigh between 2.5-3.5 tonnes.
In other words, all HGVs, plus many light commercial vehicles (LGVs) such as the ones used by delivery companies, will now fall under the goods operator’s licence.
The government’s call for evidence on changes to the goods vehicle operator’s licence was issued on 29th June 2021 and you have until 23:59 on 24th August this year to make your voice heard.
